What is “Tsun-dere”, Dictionary of Otaku Lingo

Tsun-dere
explanation:
“Tsun-dere” means characters who take a cold or bad-tempered attitude toward her partner first, but then when they are alone who change usual attitude to modest, shy, coquettish and dallying attitude suddenly. Such a cold attitude is called Tsuntsun. And such a coquettish attitude is called Deredere. In short, Tsun-dere is characters (the characters are often girls) who have both 2 attitudes. Otaku feel the gap of the 2 attitudes.

The Familiar of Zero / Louise

origin:
The word “Tsun-dere” was used for the first time in a thread on 2002 Juanuary 4th. Those days PC game “Kimi ga Nozomu Eien” and “Cosmos no Sora ni” were popular. And in a topic of concerning Ayu Daikuji from “Kimi ga Nozomu Eien” and Haruhi Sakuma from “Cosmos no Sora ni”, Tsun-dere was used first. So Ayu Daikuji and Haruhi Sakuma seems the mother of Tsun-dere.
Often, because the 2 mothers and the other Tsun-dere charachters “Kiri Sakura“, “Toko Kirihara” and so on have slant eyes, twintailed hair style or rough way of speaking, these became important elements of Tsun-dere.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien / Ayu Daikuji

By the way, Ayu’s favorite phrase is “Step on excrement of cat!!”. And anime “Kimi ga Nozomu Eien” is a masterpiece in my opinion.

supplement:
Recent characters who have elements of Tsundere are “Haruhi Suzumiya“, “Kagami Hiiragi“, “Louise“, “Shana” and so on. And Rie Kugimiya played so many roles of Tsun-dere characters and she seems now No.1 voice actress of Tsun-dere.
Now, some new categories of characters are derived from Tsun-dere. “Yan-dere“, “Tsun-tsun“, “Dere-tsun” and so on are so.

Thank you for the info. The truth is, I prefer kuudere rather than tsundere.

    Kuudere lol
You are well informed about lingo!
I think the best character is Ruri Hoshino from “Martian Successor Nadesico” in kuudere characters.

Lol. Because I like “straight-forward” and cool character (wheter girl or boy).

Yes, I agree. Especially that “whether girl or boy” is great attitude as a fan of anime and manga!
    That’s right exactly.
